Buying more parts? You’re not alone

While the demand for repair parts has diminished in recent years, that trend is likely over, according to Mark Purtilar, vice president and general manager, ArvinMeritor Commercial Vehicle Aftermarket, Florence, Ky.

Purtilar cites record-setting commercial-vehicle sales and the resulting diminished age of vehicles in service, along with improved component durability, as reasons for reduced part demand. However, “given the slowdown in production and sales of new commercial vehicles, we will see this trend reverse itself,” he says.

“The average vehicle age will be on the rise,” Purtilar explains “and the operation of used trucks will increase parts consumption as component life-cycles mature.”
