Katrina closes many Gulf Coast roads

Hurricane Katrina left many roads and bridges closed along the storm-ravaged Gulf Coast, including much of Interstate 10.

Important roads and bridges with significant damage include the I-10 bridges between New Orleans and Slidell. The parishes of St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, Plaquemine and Orleans reported all roads into New Orleans closed and all roads in Jefferson Parish closed.

I-10 is closed through much of Louisiana and all of Mississippi. It is limited to one lane in each direction at the Wallace Tunnel in Mobile, and hazardous waste is barred from the tunnel. U.S. 90/98, a truck route, is reduced to one lane in each direction on the Cochrane Africatown Bridge in Mobile.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation posted a list of roads closed including Highway 90 from Louisiana to Alabama, Highway 49 from Seminary to Gulfport and Interstate 59 from Laurel to Louisiana.

Florida has the fewest closings, but the Brooks Bridge on Highway 98 in Okaloosa and the Escambia Bridge at Pensacola Beach are closed.
