Gregory Hyland, a senior executive at trucking company Ryder System Inc. of Miami, has left the company to join Tampa-based Walter Industries.

According to the Associated Press, Walter Industries — which provides homebuilding, financing and water transmission products — has appointed Hyland chairman, president and chief executive officer. He succeeds Don DeFosset, who plans to retire.

Hyland, 54, most recently served as president of U.S. fleet management solutions for Ryder, a provider of transportation, logistics and supply chain services.

In a separate statement, Ryder said its chairman and CEO, Greg Swienton, will assume Hyland’s duties until a successor is named.
