The National Private Truck Council and J.J. Keller & Associates recently presented a free webcast, “Negligent Hiring: How to Protect Your Operation,” that discussed how companies can protect themselves from the risks associated with negligent hiring decisions.
Gary Petty, NPTC president and CEO, moderated the webcast, which was conducted in two different sessions. Other presenters included Jesse Bacon, vice president and general counsel at Kroll Worldwide, a risk consulting company; Ken Higgins, director of transportation and human resources at J.F. Fick, a wholesaler for Anheuser-Busch; and Len Satkowski, senior safety consultant at Keller.
The presentation incorporated an overview of hiring rules and requirements, as well as the ways driver shortages, misunderstanding regulations and other elements can lead to negligent driver-hiring decisions. Participants also heard how negligent hiring decisions affect public safety and security, as well as a company’s insurance premiums, liability and safety rating.
Presenters outlined preventive strategies, including going above and beyond legal requirements for driver qualification management. They also addressed strategies for improving the hiring process at each stage, from creating a job description to reviewing applications, conducting background checks and drug screening, and completing driver qualification file requirements.
