A mixing bowl bridge will open at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 2 on the Springfield Interchange for Virginia motorists traveling from Interstate 395 South to I-95 North toward the Wilson Bridge.

The current exit will close permanently at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. Traffic will be detoured to the outer loop/I-495 North and turn around at Braddock Road. One of two lanes on the ramp from I-395 South to I-495 North will be closed, and one of three through lanes will be closed on I-395 South near Edsall Road.

The 16-foot-wide, one-lane bridge has two eight-foot shoulders and will carry about 450 vehicles an hour during peak hours and about 5,000 vehicles a day.

The ramp to the new bridge is located nearly a mile before the existing ramp and will require motorists to move into the right lanes just south of Edsall Road. Message signs will alert motorists to the new exit.

The new bridge is one of 50 being constructed to eliminate weaving and merging and make it easier and safer for drivers to navigate the interchange.
