The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration seeks ideas to improve commercial vehicle safety inspections.

The agency published a notice in the Aug. 16 Federal Register inviting “comments, suggestions and creative ideas.”

The FMCSA wants to automate some or all of the inspection process. New technologies such as onboard diagnostics and wireless communications could improve the speed and thoroughness of roadside inspections significantly, the agency suggested.

Last year, 3 million roadside safety inspections resulted in 1 million out-of-service violations and 7.2 million total violations, the agency said.

Comments may be submitted by Monday, Oct. 17 to http://dms.dot.gov. Mention docket number FMCSA-2005-22097.
