Kohler Power Systems has announced it will expand its generator product line to include an auxiliary power unit for the heavy-duty trucking industry. Kohler says the new 5-kilowatt APU will be available later this year and will offer trucking fleets, OEMs and owner-operators the only air-cooled APU in the 5kW, side-rail mounted size.

Understanding that compactness is crucial, Kohler designed its first APU product to be one of the smallest air-cooled generators on the market – 27 inches wide, 26 inches high and 23 inches deep – as well as one of the lightest, weighing less than 350 pounds. The APU, which runs on 120-volt AC and 50-Amp DC power, also is designed with a direct-drive alternator, a direct connection between the engine and alternator that the company says eliminates the alternator belts, facilitating increased reliability and reduced maintenance issues. Additionally, the APU has an oil service interval of 500 hours.

“We’ve kept the truck owner’s needs in mind when designing this new APU,” says Chris Baldwin, director of Kohler’s mobile generator business. “We are offering a space-saving, fuel-efficient product that keeps installation and maintenance costs to a minimum. The Kohler APU provides the peace of mind that comes with a focus on reliability and ease-of-use, backed by an industry-leading distribution and service network of more than 500 Kohler distributors and dealers nationwide.”

The Kohler Advanced Digital Controller, a standard feature on the new APU product, is designed to allow the driver to start and stop the generator, as well as adjust the heating and cooling, from inside the cab. The digital controller also features an easy-to-read LED screen that displays up to 13 operational conditions. A custom sound-attenuated enclosure is designed for quiet operation.
