A Rhode Island trucking company reportedly will be arraigned in federal court today, Jan. 3, on charges of illegally shipping hazardous waste. The president of Berkeley Transportation Co. of Cumberland has agreed to plead guilty and pay $35,000 to the Department of Environmental Management’s Environmental Response Fund, according to Cox.net’s Rhode Island website.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office also is asking the court to impose an $80,000 fine and order the company to establish an environmental compliance program, according to the website. Berkeley is charged with illegally shipping hazardous waste from East Providence to a site in Warwick on two occasions in September 2004, the website reported.
