Truckers may need passports sooner than expected

Truckers carrying goods into the United States from Canada or Mexico soon may need passports earlier than expected. A recent notice in the Federal Register indicates that the Departments of State and Homeland Security may require passports for U.S., Canadian or Mexican citizens entering or re-entering the United States by Jan. 1, 2008.

Despite Congress’ extension of the deadline to June 2009, the notice indicates that the departments are working to implement the Western Hemisphere Travel initiative for land and sea travel earlier than that date.

For more information on how to get a passport, go to http://travel.state.gov and click “Passports” in the horizontal blue bar.
