ATA welcomes PHMSA appointment of Willke

The American Trucking Associations on Friday, July 13, welcomed the recent appointment of Ted Willke as associate administrator for hazardous materials safety in the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“Dr. Willke’s credentials, leadership ability, management experience and expertise in risk management make him an excellent choice for this important position,” says Rich Moskowitz, ATA vice president of energy policy and regulatory affairs counsel. “Dr. Willke understands the importance of reducing risks while maintaining our nation’s transportation efficiencies.”

For a number of months, Willke held this position in PHMSA on an acting basis. Previously, he served as acting associate administrator for pipeline safety and deputy associate administrator for pipeline safety.

Prior to joining DOT, Willke was director and chief executive officer of the Carnegie Mellon Research Institute in Pittsburgh. During 15 years with the Gas Research Institute in Chicago, he was vice president of research and development for gas transmission and distribution, and environmental and safety programs. Willke also has served on a number of industry committees.
