Air-Weigh announced on Wednesday, Aug. 1, the availability of the Air-Weigh 5800-series tractor scale as a factory option for all Western Star Trucks with rear air suspensions. The Air-Weigh scales are spec’d through the custom application engineering offered by Western Star. Interested customers are requested to contact their local Western Star dealer for pricing and ordering information.

“Western Star and Air-Weigh have teamed up to offer onboard scaling systems that contribute to efficient and productive trucking operations,” says Martin Ambros, president of Eugene, Ore.-based Air-Weigh. “By working with Western Star Trucks to offer this factory-installed option, we are helping their customers save money with a product that provides a solid return on investment.”

Onboard scales can improve fleet productivity and reduce operating costs and delays caused by check-weighing. When an Air-Weigh-equipped tractor picks up a trailer with an Air-Weigh scale, the trailer weight data is sent automatically to the truck’s in-dash display, where the driver is able to see steer, drive and up to seven trailer axle weights along with net payload and GVW. The system communicates over existing wiring between the tractor and trailer and operates off of the vehicle power. Once calibrated, Air-Weigh customers claim weight accuracy to be well within 300 pounds of a Department of Transportation-certified scale.

“Onboard scales have become part of the industry’s standard devices for modern trucks,” says T.R. Reed, Western Star product manager. “Western Star is pleased to offer Air-Weigh to our customers.”
