Top Flite Express truck driver John Vanscoy was awarded a commendation by the City of Roseville, Mich., for heroic actions he demonstrated during a serious auto accident, putting himself in harm’s way to help ensure the safety of two accident victims.

On May 9, 2007, a car traveling eastbound on Interstate 94 near the 12 Mile Road intersection in Roseville hit a retainer wall, rolled several times and landed back on the road. Due to heavy rush-hour traffic, paramedics were having trouble getting to the passengers trapped in the vehicle. Vanscoy pulled his semi-truck across the freeway, blocking oncoming traffic, and remained there until both occupants of the vehicle were transported safely to the hospital where they were treated and released.

The commendation, presented by City of Roseville Fire Marshal David Glancy, recognizes Vanscoy for going above and beyond the call of duty in providing necessary assistance to paramedics who otherwise might not have reached the car accident victims in time.

“We are proud to have a team member who demonstrated such an act of bravery and concern for others,” says Greg Humes, president of Detroit-based Top Flite Express. “Safety is a priority to all of our drivers – John’s actions are an extraordinary example of this commitment and an inspiration to all drivers.”

Vanscoy has 15 years of experience as a truck driver and has been with Top Flite since July 2005. He was on his way home to his house in New Haven, Mich. after finishing his route when he stopped to help paramedics reach the accident victims.
