Mexican truck program rolls

U. S. Transportation Command awarded a contract potentially worth $1.6 billion to Con-way subsidiary Menlo Worldwide Government Services to manage Department of Defense freight movements in the continental United States with the goal of maximizing efficiencies and reducing cost.

Freight Transportation Services Index fell 0.4 percent in July from its June level, falling for the second consecutive month to its lowest level since February, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported. The July decline was the third decrease in the freight index in four months.

Federal Highway Administration will reimburse states and other jurisdictions more than $128 million they have spent on recent emergency road and bridge repairs, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters announced. Among the projects were repairs to the I-580 interchange in Oakland, Calif., that collapsed because of a truck fire in April, and $20 million for the repair of Mississippi roads damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Alphonso “Al” Lewis, a Roadway Express driver based in Montgomery, Ala., was named the 2007 National Truck Driving Grand Champion. Lewis’ driving skills and knowledge of transportation and truck safety information topped those of 377 other drivers from all across the United States in the National Truck Driving Championships, held in Minneapolis Aug. 21-25.

Peter Karlsten, head of Volvo Trucks North America, has been appointed president of Volvo Powertrain effective Dec. 1, when Lars-G
