Transportation Costing Group, providers of activity-based profitability and cost analysis for the transportation industry, announced that Howard Sheppard Inc. has selected its Profitability Management Tools. The motor carrier says it will use TCG’s Truckload Cost Information System (TL/CIS) to more effectively measure the actual cost and profitability of each shipment hauled by its various operations.

“We chose the TCG activity-based costing system to address several unique challenges,” says Eric Holmes, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Howard Sheppard. “With a number of very different operations and locations that serve common customers with shared equipment, we need to determine credible costs and profitability based on actual data that is fully reconciled with our general ledger. Another need was a system that integrates with our enterprise software from Innovative Computing Corporation to gather data seamlessly from dispatch, driver settlement, accounting and other areas. Each of these needs is uniquely addressed by TL/CIS.”

Howard Sheppard Inc., headquartered in Sandersville, Ga., is a for-hire common and contract truckload carrier that offers dry van, bulk, flatbed, dump bed and containerized (dry and refrigerated) freight services from five terminal locations.

“TL/CIS is perfectly suited to address the priorities of Howard Sheppard,” says Jack Jones, vice president at TCG, based in Rockville, Md. “The complexity of their business model presents a great opportunity to demonstrate how flexible and adaptable our activity-based software is for every type of carrier. We look forward to working with them to meet their needs.”
