Retail prices for sleeper tractors increased 17 percent in 2011 compared to 2010, according to a new report by the ATD/NADA Official Commercial Truck Guide. Class 8 commercial trucks also had about 10 percent higher mileage in 2011 than in 2010, according to the February Guidelines report. The average sleeper truck by dealers in 2011 was just less than 6 years old, cost $46,436 and had 523,272 miles.
Among other highlights of the report:
• Wholesale prices for sleeper tractors were up 36 percent on mileage, 4.3 percent higher than 2010;
• Construction trucks were up 7.4 percent on mileage, 19 percent higher;
• Class 3-4 cabovers were up slightly, but Class 6 conventionals stayed flat;
• The price gap between aerodynamic and owner-operator trucks is increasing; and
• Price ceilings are likely in place in the retail and wholesale markets, and price growth is forecast to level out in 2012.
