As part of the state’s first long-term transportation funding plan in nearly three decades, Virginia will do away with fuel taxes at the pump and increase sales taxes to make up the difference, along with upping taxes on wholesale of fuels.
Moreover, the state has added a hurdle to instituting tolls on Interstate 95 by requiring that tolls be approved by the state’s legislature.
The bill has not been signed yet, but Gov. Bob McDonnell is expected to sign it soon.
The American Trucking Associations and the National Association of Truck Stop Operators had led a campaign against the tolling of I-95, and, in an announcement, ATA says Virginia’s new plan is “an overwhelming sign of growing opposition to tolls on existing interstates.”
