Per-mile spot market rates in all three segments — reefer, dry van and flatbed — fell in December, bucking seasonal trends seen in recent years, according to data released Jan. 2 by Internet Truckstop.

Despite big jumps for reefer and dry van in November, rates in all three segments have now fallen in every month since June (save for a small uptick for reefer in September.)

Rates in all three segments soared the first half of the year, setting records in their June peak.

The second half of the year, however, told a different story, and rates landed in December only a few cents higher than the same month last year.

Van rates saw the biggest month-to-month drop, 13 cents to $2.08, putting it 4 cents higher than December 2013.

Flatbed rates fell 4 cents in December to $2.14, 6 cents above December 2013.

Reefer had the smallest month-to-month drop — 2 cents to $2.48. It also had the largest year-to-year differential — 21 cents higher than December 2013.
