During the past week, news from technology suppliers focused on tools to improve cost savings in the areas of driver safety and performance.

The reason why video-based safety systems continue to be in demand to capture risky driving behaviors was highlighted in a recent study from Verizon Connect. The study found that the majority of commercial vehicle dangerous driving incidents go unreported.

Results from a survey of 1,000 adults in the United States by Verizon Connect, in partnership with Wakefield Research, in June 2019 show:

  • 4 in 5 (81%) people say they have witnessed a commercial vehicle being driven dangerously on the road, but only 2 in 5 (41%) of those have reported the incident.
  • City residents are more likely to report dangerous driving than those in the suburbs or rural areas: More than half (51%) of adults in the city, who say they have witnessed dangerous commercial driving, have reported it vs. 39% of adults in the suburbs.
  • Millennials are more likely to report dangerous driving than their older peers. More than half (54%) of Millennials who say they have witnessed dangerous commercial driving have reported it vs. just 45% of Gen Xers and 25% of Boomers.

The top reasons for not reporting are people being unable to capture evidence of the dangerous incident (37%), not being able to get identification of the driver (35%) or they did not know to whom/where to report the information (30%).

Verizon Connect noted that smart technologies like AI-enabled dash cams, IoT sensors and cloud platforms are playing an increasingly important role in helping fleets train and coach driving behavior.

Samsara gives visibility into driving events such as harsh braking, rolling stops, near-misses, speeding, and distracted driving.

Real time driver coaching

Besides capturing risky driver behaviors, fleets are using technology to give drivers real-time coaching to maximize fuel efficiency.

Leonard’s Express, a family-owned asset-based transportation solutions provider, is targeting a 3% fuel savings with Vnomics True Fuel after testing the product. Vnomics True Fuel combines real-time driver coaching with fuel efficiency data.
