FMCSA broadening out-of-service order scope to carriers with pattern of violating safety rules
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is set to publish a proposed rule in the Federal Register next week that will allow it to suspend or revoke the authority of motor carriers who have been found to have a pattern of “egregious disregard” for federal safety rules, rather than relying on results of compliance reviews alone.

A survey of nearly 1,700 long-haul truck drivers showed a “constellation of chronic disease risk factors” in long-haul drivers, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking, physical inactivity and sleep duration.

95% of 5,500 trucking companies in Pilot Flying J’s settlement have received payment, Pilot says
In an update posted on its Rebate Education website, Pilot Flying J said that by the end of 2013, it had paid back about 95 percent of the 5,500 trucking companies owed money in the class-action settlement an Arkansas court approved in November.

DEA to classify synthetic marijuana as Schedule 1 drug, illegal for truck drivers to use or possess
The DEA announced its intent this week to classify four versions of synthetic marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug and therefore regulated under the Controlled Substances Act, which would mean truck operators who use synthetic marijuana and fail a drug test will be disqualified from operating a commercial motor vehicle.
