Trucking employment up 8,400 jobs in November, unemployment rate dips to 5-year low
A total of 8,400 payroll jobs were added to the for-hire trucking industry’s payroll in November — the first real jump since the spring of this year, coming on the heels of about six months of stagnant or no growth in the industry’s employment. Moreover, October’s preliminary employment numbers were upwardly revised to 2,400 jobs added.

The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel rose for the second week in a row in the week ended Dec. 2, moving up 3.9 cents to $3.883, presumably spurred by increased demand from movement of goods for the holidays and consumer-related holiday activities like traveling and shopping.

Class 8 orders see ‘sharp move upward,’ trailer orders jump 43 percent
Class 8 orders were strong in October, according to ACT Research, who released its monthly State of the Industry report last week. The research firm also reported a strong surge in trailer orders, saying net orders were up 43 percent from September.

The for-hire trucking industry added 400 new payroll jobs on a net basis in October, according to latest figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The trucking jobs total has been essentially flat since April.

FTR’s Trucking Conditions sees continued strength as expected late year decline looms
The Trucking Conditions Index, produced monthly by FTR, continued to move higher in September and approach what FTR calls a “solidly favorable range for trucking companies.” However, uncertainty in Washington and constricting hours-of-service rules are set to knock the index off kilter.
