An off-duty officer with the New York City Police Department was killed this morning after colliding head-on into a city trash truck.
Twenty-eight-year-old Brian Kessler, who was hired by NYPD nine months ago, had been driving home from work in Pelham Bay Park near a police shooting range when the wreck occurred around 8:20 a.m.
The driver of the Parks Department refuse truck had minor injuries.
The vehicles collided on Shore Road in a traffic circle (see maps below) that has had a history of bad accidents, according to abc7ny.com.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Icy conditions had been reported in the area.
