Accuride has developed ProShield XGT aluminum wheel surface protectant for heavy-duty truck and trailer wheels. The new factory wheel coating bonds directly to the aluminum microstructure and is specifically designed to counteract the effects mechanical damage and road salts that lead to filiform corrosion – the wormlike corrosion filaments that can spread underneath a traditional wheel coating.
Accuride said the new coating will extend corrosion protection through the life of the truck while maintaining a factory-gloss finish. ProShield XGT also has a hydrophobic surface designed to repel water, oil, and contaminants.
“The chemical makeup of the snow and ice melt products are more aggressive than they used to be,” said Jayne Orr, senior vice president of sales for Accuride. “ProShield XGT is built to meet the realities head on, because the road didn't get any kinder, so the wheels had to get smarter.”
Accuride put ProShield XGT through rigorous accelerated testing, including repeated cycles of extreme temperatures, humidity, and exposure to deicing chemicals, simulating eight years of real‑world environmental stress.
“ProShield XGT isn't just another coating, it's not just an upgrade or a tweak, it's a fundamental leap forward on how wheels are protected, cleaned, and expected to perform in the harshest conditions,” said Orr.
ProSheild XGT is expected to fully launch in Q2 2026 with production at its manufacturing facility in Erie, Penn.
