Transportation capacity has reached historically low levels. In June, the Logistics Managers’ Index recorded a contraction in capacity for the seventh consecutive month. During the first five months of the year, the ATA For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased by two percent compared with the same period in 2025.

The pressure on capacity has pushed spot market and contract rates sharply higher. For week 31, ending Aug. 7, 2026, Truckstop.com reported that spot rates are up 41% year over year and that load volumes are 19% higher than in the same week of 2025.

During this supply-constrained recovery, driver communications and workflows are proving essential for fleets to accelerate profitability. Many are gaining an advantage through custom mobile apps.

With traditional mobile communication systems, drivers must scroll through different screens to view hours-of-service details, load information, messages, and to access information and resources.

By integrating with fleets’ existing mobile and back-office systems, these apps give drivers access to trip-planning details, customer instructions, maintenance updates, messaging, and workflow prompts in a single pane, as well as access to third-party apps from shippers, weigh scales, state DOT websites, and more.

Many drivers switch between applications to plan fuel stops, monitor weather, enter destinations into navigation systems, and gather information before starting routes. These inefficiencies often result in productivity losses of 30 minutes or more per day.

All the information they need is in one place, including key points of interest such as approved fuel networks, fleet terminals, customer locations, and route restrictions. Fleets can mark roads or areas drivers should avoid, including toll roads, restricted residential areas, and locations with elevated safety risks.

Drivers see these route alerts before their trips begin, helping them identify sharp turns, hazardous intersections, steep grades, and other problem areas. They can anticipate and plan to avoid risky maneuvers on their routes.

At the same time, fleets have visibility into how drivers change their planned routes, such as when they reroute, add stops, and how they respond to weather and road conditions. With this visibility, they can improve load planning, safety, and billing accuracy.

The fleet also publishes freight-demand maps in its app to help drivers make better scheduling and availability decisions.

Like many fleets, Fraley and Schilling, a 650-truck diversified fleet based in Rushville, Ind., has a custom app that provides drivers with a single interface containing all the tools they need to perform their jobs successfully, boosting job satisfaction and retention.

Everything, from hours-of-service visibility, trip planning, load status updates, document capture, and messaging, is available in its app dashboard. The fleet’s custom workflow prevents drivers from proceeding to the next load until they have submitted the necessary documents for their current assignment.

“Drivers want to get paid as quickly as possible. The best way to make that happen is for them to submit their paperwork on time — and now they do,” says Nicky Cupp, Fraley & Schilling’s director of continuous improvement.

Creating long-term flexibility

As the freight market tightens, fleets that continue to run fragmented systems and disconnected workflows are losing their competitive edge.

Fleets with unified mobile app platforms have the advantage of scaling growth. They are consolidating technology, standardizing processes, and no longer waiting on vendors to make changes or add features. Instead, they are making changes and adding features themselves to meet customer requirements, solve challenges, and address driver needs.

With this agility, fleets can achieve greater discipline and control while meeting rising expectations from customers and drivers in today’s freight market.
