Yet telematics doesn’t just identify risky driving behaviors. Savvy transportation companies are analyzing the data from telematics systems to guide programs on driver well-being and organizational performance.

Driver turnover remains one of the industry's most expensive and disruptive risk factors. Well-being gaps are a quiet driver of that number: A driver who is fatigued, unwell or unsupported is more likely to leave, and the telematics data often shows the warning signs before that happens.

Identifying the symptoms

With thousands of new data points every day, making sense of telematics data can be challenging. Analytics experts understand that the important part isn’t the individual data points but the patterns that emerge from that data. Transportation leaders who pay attention to these patterns need to understand that the data points are just symptoms of struggles their drivers are facing. For example:

  • Increased instances of hard braking and sudden lane changes may indicate slower reaction times.
  • Driving during high-risk hours (such as late nights or early morning shifts) may lead to increased accident rates.
  • Those who tailgate or accelerate aggressively may also see more accidents, or just a ride that’s not as smooth.

The real problems

If these patterns are the symptoms, it’s critical to understand the causes underneath the symptoms. Slower reaction times may be due to fatigue or other health challenges. Accident rates may be growing because drivers are not getting enough sleep — or the issue may be that they aren’t sleeping at the right times. Drivers who are aggressive or excessively stressed out may benefit from driving a different route or following a different schedule to ease the strain.

The data is there for anyone who knows where to look: Sleep deprivation leads to real side effects — especially when it comes to driving. In fact, almost 50% of truck drivers sleep fewer than six hours a night. Fatigued drivers are just as likely to have a crash as someone with a blood alcohol level of 0.08. Even worse, an erratic sleep schedule — common among truck drivers — can be linked to accident rates and sleep deprivation.

Similarly, another risk factor for accidents is chronic illness. Truck drivers have higher rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and depression than other workers. They also tend to smoke more, which may actually be correlated with those other health challenges.

Reshaping operations

Well-being investment also pays off outside the safety column. Nearly all fleets (99%) offer health insurance, but paid sick leave (55% overall) and 401(k) access (87% overall) still lag well behind, especially at smaller carriers. In a driver market where retention is as hard-fought as freight, closing that gap is itself a well-being strategy.

Using predictive analytics, transportation companies can analyze their telematics data to identify these patterns before they lead to accidents — if their leaders are brave enough to ask the hard questions, such as:

  • Are health issues showing up in the driving data? Look for hard braking or other data points that may suggest drivers are struggling with sleep or other health issues.
  • Are staffing shortages forcing unsafe hours or creating stress? Drivers may be asked to work more hours per day or days per week to compensate.

The answers to these questions — and how business leaders respond — can separate reactive safety programs from ones that produce lasting reductions in incident rates.

Focus on well-being

Use the data to target the specific challenges drivers are facing. These well-being programs might include one or several of the following:

  • On-demand virtual healthcare for immediate medical consultations.
  • Preventive care incentives that catch chronic conditions early.
  • Coaching and recognition programs that reinforce good behavior rather than only flagging risk.
  • Sleep apnea screening programs, which may correlate with hard braking or reaction time issues that pop up in the telematics data.
  • Mental health support through employee assistance programs (EAPs).
  • Financial education to alleviate money-related stress, which leads to driver turnover.

In addition, transportation companies may want to offer practical tools that can support drivers in other ways, such as apps that track or manage sleep or nutrition challenges. Firms that can provide access to fitness programs designed for limited time and space may also find success.

All transportation organizations have to care for their drivers better. But the companies that gain the greatest advantage will be those that recognize telematics is not just a safety technology. It is a strategic tool for understanding and supporting the people who keep their business moving.
