The Kenworth C580 is the successor to the legendary C500, an extreme severe-duty vocational truck that tackled demanding off-road logging, mining, and oilfield operations globally since 1972.
Capable of carrying loads approaching one million pounds depending on its configuration, the C580 retains the core running gear, frame components, suspensions, and axles of its predecessor while introducing critical structural, powertrain, and interior modernizations.
The primary catalyst for the change was Kenworth retiring its legacy 1.9-meter cab platform due to regulatory, supply base, and engine emission compatibility constraints. In its place, the C580 adopts Kenworth’s 2.1-meter cab platform.
This updated structure increases cabin space between the seats, lowers interior noise, and enhances overall driver visibility via a larger windshield and a 7-inch higher cab mount compared to a T880. Despite this elevated cab position, the truck’s overall height matches the C500, preserving compatibility with existing bodies and aftermarket outfits.
Under the hood, North American models feature the 2027 Cummins X15 engine—producing 525 to 605 horsepower—paired with the C500’s proven 1,780-square-inch cooling package. A key mechanical addition to the transmission lineup is the Eaton Endurant XD Pro, an 18-speed automated transmission built specifically for extreme-duty applications.
For commercial operators, the C580 establishes strong cab and electrical architecture commonality with vocational siblings like the T880, simplifying parts stocking, maintenance, and vehicle upfitting. Behind the wheel at PACCAR’s Technical Center, the truck proved remarkably drivable, offering excellent outward visibility and a quiet, composed ride—particularly on domestic air-ride specifications compared to stiffer export spring suspensions. Slated to enter production in early 2027, the Kenworth C580 stands less as a radical redesign and more as an essential modern upgrade to an industry workhorse.

Kenworth says this is the last truck of its caliber being built. It's called the C-5 80, and it's a replacement for the C 500, a truck that's been doing some of the most demanding jobs on Earth since 1972.
00;00;20;20 - 00;00;48;20
Lawson Rudisill
Depending on how it's configured, the C-5 80 can be rated for loads approaching 1 million pounds. In this video, I'm at Packers Technical Center in Washington, getting an early look at the C5 80 before it begins production in early 2027. We're going to find out why Kenworth retired the C 500. What's changed in its replacement, what that means for businesses.

The story begins in 1972, when Kenworth first introduced the C 500 made for extreme vocational applications. While I was at Packers Technical Center in Washington, I spoke with Alex Reed, Kenworth vocational marketing manager, and he gave me a rundown of some of the applications that the C 500 became known for.
00;01;34;01 - 00;01;54;16
Alex Reid
C5 hundreds have really become the truck of choice in applications like off road logging, mining applications, as well as all field and field servicing. You'll see these very commonly in Alberta, in Texas, North Dakota, and then as far as export destinations, they go all over the globe, but very, very common in the extremes.
00;01;54;21 - 00;02;31;10
Lawson Rudisill
And over time, those applications made the C 500 become known as one of the most capable vocational trucks in Kenworth lineup. But if the C 500 was still capable of doing all the things that made it famous, why is Kenworth retiring it? While the answer has less to do with the truck's capabilities and more to do with the cab that it was built around, the C 500 was built on what Kenworth calls its 1.9m cab platform, and in 2025, they announced that they would be ending production of that platform in 2026.
00;02;31;12 - 00;02;35;24
Lawson Rudisill
Why are you ending production of the Old Style Cab?
00;02;35;26 - 00;02;57;10
Alex Reid
We have a number of reasons for it. Some of it has to do with regulation and emissions that that particular Cab isn't compatible with, with newer engines, and some of it has to do with our our supply base. So there's a there's a few things going on with that one. Yeah. The writing is, is on the wall there for that cab platform.
00;02;57;13 - 00;03;21;13
Lawson Rudisill
For the C-5. BT Kenworth kept much of the same hardware that made the C5 hundred famous, but they just built it around their new 2.1m cab platform. So there are benefits to the bigger cab. There's more space between the seats, there's updated technology, and according to Kenworth, it's quieter and there's better visibility now. The better visibility comes from two main things.
00;03;21;13 - 00;03;53;09
Lawson Rudisill
There's a larger windshield, but also the cab is mounted seven inches higher than on a comparable T8 80, and that's now the closest truck to the C5 80 in Kenworth lineup. But you don't have to worry. Despite the higher seating position, the higher mounting position of the cab, the overall height of the C5 80 is just about the same as the C 500, so you don't need to worry about ride height or your existing body applications.
00;03;53;12 - 00;04;29;10
Lawson Rudisill
So part of the reason Kenworth moved away from their older cab platform was compatibility with newer engines and emissions requirements. So naturally, the C5 80 gets some new powertrain options. Customers in North America will have access to the 2027 Cummins X15, with ratings from 525 horsepower, two 605 horsepower. And to support this engine in extreme applications, can work kept the large 1780 inch cooling package that was on the C pipe hundred.
00;04;29;13 - 00;04;38;21
Lawson Rudisill
When it comes to transmission offerings, the C5 80 retains all the same offerings of the C 500 had, but it gains one important new option.
00;04;38;21 - 00;04;51;16
Alex Reid
What is new for the C5 80 is that moving to our newer technology and cab platform has allowed us to introduce the Eaton and XD Pro transmissions of this truck that is a lightweight, high performance 18 speed automatic transmission.
00;04;51;17 - 00;05;13;22
Lawson Rudisill
The inclusion of the Eaton Endurance XD Pro transmission is a first for the Extreme Duty segment. This is a newer transmission that is built for the applications that the C5 80 will see. So the main things that have changed when it comes to the C5 80 compared to the 500 are the cab, the engine and the transmission. Other than that.
00;05;13;23 - 00;05;15;07
Lawson Rudisill
Not much has changed.
00;05;15;08 - 00;05;33;07
Alex Reid
I think the most important thing to note here are the things that haven't changed. So if you look at this truck from the beltline down, almost nothing has changed. The frame components, the suspensions, the axles, all of that running gear that you could get on a C5 hundred is still available on a C5 80, and none of that has changed.
00;05;33;07 - 00;05;46;00
Alex Reid
If you have existing body integrations, if you have existing accessories, bumpers, any of that kind of aftermarket outfit stuff that fits bolts onto the frame of AC5 hundred, it'll fit on your C5 80.
00;05;46;03 - 00;06;09;18
Lawson Rudisill
So new trucks are cool, but the C5 80 isn't a consumer vehicle, so why should businesses care about it? Well, one of the biggest reasons is commonality. Now that Kenworth has made the C5 80 around their new 2.1m cab platform, it brings it closer to some of their other new vocational trucks in their lineup, specifically the 880.
00;06;09;20 - 00;06;24;06
Alex Reid
If you're already running T-80, bringing C5 80 into your fleet, we'll share a common electrical architecture cab architecture. Your up fitting will be common between these trucks, so easier for your part stocking, easier for your mechanics.
00;06;24;06 - 00;06;43;02
Lawson Rudisill
But commonality with Kenworth other trucks is only one reason businesses should care. The other reason is if you're a business that's operating some of the toughest environments on Earth, this truck matters to you simply because it exists. There's really not many other options to choose from in this segment.
00;06;43;03 - 00;06;55;19
Alex Reid
There are jobs out there that can only be done by a C5 hundred or C5 80. Being able to continue offering this truck to the market to allow those jobs to continue to be done is really why this truck exists.
00;06;55;22 - 00;07;22;00
Lawson Rudisill
So of course, I didn't go all the way out to Washington without driving one of these trucks, and I actually got to drive two different versions. One was a domestic spec winch tractor, and the other one was an export spec six by six day cab that was made for applications like Middle Eastern oil fields. So the first thing I noticed once I got up close to these trucks was their size.
00;07;22;02 - 00;07;31;25
Lawson Rudisill
They're pretty big trucks, but fortunately both of the trucks were a lot easier to drive than they looked.
00;07;31;28 - 00;07;51;05
Lawson Rudisill
One of the first things I noticed once I started riding was visibility. The higher ride height, the larger windshield and the rear view mirrors made seeing everything around me really easy. I never had any trouble tracking my trailer as I was driving down the track. So the second thing that I paid attention to while driving was ride quality.
00;07;51;05 - 00;07;55;05
Lawson Rudisill
And this is where the domestic spec version really stood out. All right, so.
00;07;55;05 - 00;08;02;25
Lawson Rudisill
We're on the dirt road here. This is kind of what these trucks would see a lot of when they're in action.
00;08;02;25 - 00;08;20;10
Lawson Rudisill
While I was driving that truck, even on the gravel sections, I didn't feel much in the cab. It was very smooth. It wasn't bumpy at all, but when I drove the export spec version, it was a lot bumpier. In the cab, there was a there was a good bit of movement.
00;08;20;13 - 00;08;21;05
Lawson Rudisill
But this.
00;08;21;05 - 00;08;43;06
Lawson Rudisill
Really all came down to the different suspensions that the truck had. The domestic spec version had an air ride suspension and the export spec had a spring suspension. The final thing I paid attention to was cab noise, because Kenworth did say that these cabs are quieter. So I had the chance to get both of the trucks up to around 55mph while I was driving on the track.
00;08;43;06 - 00;08;57;28
Lawson Rudisill
So here you can hear what that sounds like as I got up to 55mph and what it sounded like at that speed.
00;08;58;01 - 00;09;07;08
Lawson Rudisill
All right, so we're at 55 right now. I would say overall it's a pretty quiet cab. That wasn't too loud. Yeah.
00;09;07;15 - 00;09;31;16
Lawson Rudisill
So personally, if I were going to spend hours behind the wheel of one of these trucks, I would choose the domestic spec C5 80, but it's really not a fair comparison. These two trucks are built for two different environments, but it was interesting to see how the trucks two different kind of intended applications affected what it was like to drive them because it was noticeable, it was very noticeable.
00;09;31;18 - 00;09;56;10
Lawson Rudisill
So is the C5 80 ready to take the place of the C 500? Well, from what I saw during my time at the Packer Technical Center. I would say yes, Kenworth has done a really good job of maintaining what made the C5 hundred famous while updating the cab, the engine and the transmission to bring it into the modern era as the C5 80.
00;09;56;16 - 00;10;03;01
Lawson Rudisill
And as Alex puts it, Kenworth never really intended the C5 80 to be a replacement. It's more so an upgrade.
00;10;03;01 - 00;10;17;16
Alex Reid
I would think of this as an upgrade. This is a replacement for the C5 hundred that brings the benefits of our new cab platform and technologies to the same C5 hundred chassis. That's proven itself to be kind of a legend of extreme duty.
00;10;17;17 - 00;10;39;22
Lawson Rudisill
However, the real test will come once these trucks begin production in January of 2027. Thanks so much for watching this video. I really hope you found it helpful.
