The U.S. average price of a gallon of diesel fuel increased for the second straight week during the week ended Monday, Sept. 5, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration. The average price rose 4.8 cents to $3.868 a gallon — the largest jump since mid-July — and is 93.7 cents higher than the same week last year. EIA’s weekly update was delayed one day because of the Labor Day holiday.

Prices rose in all regions, led by a 10-cent jump in California and a 7.3-cent increase on the rest of the West Coast. The smallest increase was 1.7 cents in New England. The nation’s most expensive diesel is in California, where prices crossed the $4 threshold to settle at $4.058 for the week. The least expensive diesel was in the Gulf Coast region, where the average was $3.80.
