Clean Energy Fuels — one of the country’s largest suppliers of natural gas to the trucking industry — announced last week a partnership with Covanta Energy to co-develop compressed natural gas stations at Covanta facilities around the U.S.
Covanta has about 40 facilities nationwide that convert trash to renewable energy, and each station will offer CNG to at least 30 refuse trucks a day and, Clean Energy says, depending on location, public access.
The first Clean Energy CNG station at a Covanta facility will open at the Essex County Resource Recovery Facility in Newark, N.J. later this month, Clean Energy says, and the Covanta Energy-from-Waste facility in Newark processes approximately 2,800 tons of municipal and commercial solid waste per day into approximately 65 megawatts of clean, renewable electricity — enough to power approximately 45,000 homes.
