In topping April 2012’s truck order numbers by 36 percent, April 2013’s Class 8 orders totaled 23,200 — the seventh month in a row that orders were above the 20,000 mark. Moreover, April’s order numbers were the second highest in 16 months.

Medium duty orders totaled 16,740 — the best in six months and the second best in the past 26 months.

North American Class 8 orders year to date are well above numbers from 2012, and cancellations remain “in record low territory,” said Kenny Vieth, ACT president and senior analyst, adding that’s “a positive indicator for a stronger demand.”

“As has been the case this cycle, backlogs for the medium duty market remain thin relative to build. Per-day build hit it second highest level in a year in April,” Vieth said.
