4. Pilot Flying J fraudulently withheld millions in rebates for years, documents allege

In one of the biggest scandals in the trucking industry, a court released a 120-page affidavit on April 18 stating that Pilot Flying J had knowingly withheld fuel rebates from customers.

Pilot Flying J’s headquarters in Knoxville, Tenn., was raided and placed on lockdown by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service.

The documents alleged that company salespeople took advantage of customers that were “too unsophisticated to catch” the errors.

A string of arrests and class-action lawsuits followed, and the fuel provider reached an $85 million settlement with 5,500 trucking companies.
