Abilene Motor Express is being absorbed by Swift Transportation. The announcement, shared in a letter from Abilene Motor Express President Larry Johnson, marks the end of an era for the Richmond-based carrier as it fully integrates into the Swift family.
Acquired by Knight-Swift in 2018, Abilene is scheduled to maintain its independent operations through Tuesday, January 27. During this period, the company has committed to upholding its standards of safe and professional service while resources are moved over to Swift.
“This alignment helps us work more cohesively, move faster, and better serve our drivers and customers,” Johnson stated in the announcement.
Impact on drivers and staff
The transition focuses heavily on the retention of Abilene’s workforce. Drivers will be transitioned to Swift Transportation, with the company promising:
- Clear guidance through the administrative shift.
- Ongoing support to ensure a smooth professional move.
- Continued recognition of the dedication shown by long-term team members.
Next steps for customers
Abilene management confirmed that they are currently contacting customers directly to coordinate next steps. While the branding may change, the company intends to maintain its service partnerships under the Swift banner to ensure no disruption in the supply chain.
Swift Transportation, one of the largest truckload carriers in North America, is part of the Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings (CCJ Top 250, No. 3) family.
