 9. Cummins, Eaton collaborate on new powertrain package

Vertical integration has been a pretty constant buzzword from OEMs in recent years. Several truck makers with proprietary engines have rolled out their own powertrains, touting significant potential fuel savings. Volvo Trucks has its I-Shift, Mack has its mDrive and Freightliner has the DT12 mated with its Detroit engine line.

Not to be left out in the cold, Cummins and Eaton together announced at the Technology & Maintenance Council Annual Meeting in March that they would be pairing to share the “secret sauce” between the Cummins ISX15 engine and the Eaton Fuller Advantage automated transmission. The pairing was later named the SmartAdvantage package and is said to achieve 3 to 6 percent fuel economy improvements.
