Now that the industry has some regulatory certainty with regard to diesel emission regulations, Cummins announced Thursday an updated launch plan for its Model Year 2027 North American on-highway engines, opting for a phased rollout following proposed updates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The Columbus-based engine manufacturer will introduce its new HELM platform engines—the X10 and X15—through a gradual production ramp starting in January 2027, while keeping select current-generation engines available during the transition.
The revised timeline relies on implementation flexibilities outlined in the EPA’s proposed rule changes. In its updated ruleset, the Trump EPA proposed expanding the availability and flexibility of the credit system manufacturers use to meet regulatory averages; permitting manufacturers to pay non-conformance penalties as a short-term alternative if they cannot immediately meet the hardware standards; and granting manufacturers more time to validate the reliability of new emissions-control systems under real-world operating conditions.
Cummins said its measured approach aims to maintain regulatory compliance while giving the company and fleets more time to adopt the new technology without disrupting production schedules.
"Our long-term product strategy has not changed," said Jennifer Rumsey, chair and chief executive officer of Cummins. "This is about improving the transition, not changing the destination. A phased production ramp will allow us to support customers while building confidence in our new products through real-world operation and maintaining our focus on quality."
When Cummins announced its X15 fuel agnostic platform in 2022, the debut of a diesel powered HELM unit was slated for launch in early 2026. Last year, Cummins pushed it to late 2026.
Under the updated schedule, the X15 engine will enter limited production in January 2027, with full production expected by the fourth quarter of 2027. The current-generation X15 engine will remain available alongside the new model during the ramp-up.
Cummins' X10 Engine will also go into limited production in January, with full production planned for the third quarter of 2027. The existing X12 and L9 engines will stay in production during the shift before being phased out.
As previously announced, the next-generation B platform is set to launch in January 2028. The current B6.7 engine will remain available through 2027.
Cummins noted that its revised timeline reflects preliminary assessments of the EPA’s proposed language. Company leaders warned that launch plans and timing could be adjusted if the agency's final rule differs significantly from the current proposal.
