A federal policy analysis agency thinks you should be paying more for highways and perhaps should be doing so by the mile rather than by the gallon.
In a new report, the U.S. Government Accountability Agency suggested that Congress consider a pilot program to test the viability of mileage-based fees for commercial trucks as well as electric vehicles. The GAO report also recommended that the Federal Highway Administration update its estimates of road damages imposed by all vehicle types compared with the tax revenues generated by each.
