Earnings report roundup: Knight, Swift, Celadon, Landstar

In continuation of gathering second quarter earnings reports as they come in, here’s a look at some large fleets that have reported in recent weeks:

Knight: Knight Transportation’s revenue increased 3.6 percent from the same quarter in 2012 to $244.8 million, but its operating income fell .06 percent from 2012’s 2Q to $31.9 million and its net income fell 1.8 percent to $18.9 million. Its earnings per share were unchanged at 24 cents per. Year to date, the company has seen a 10.7 percent increase in operating income — $51.5 million in the first 6 months — and a 2.8 percent increase in net income, which is up to $34.1 million. Its adjusted earnings per diluted share in the first 6 months of 2013 were up 1 cent to 43 cents per. 

Swift: Swift Transportation’s operating revenue in the quarter grew to $898.1 million, up from the last year’s second quarter’s $872.6 million. Its diluted earnings per share were up 6 cents in the quarter to 30 cents. That number has more than doubled, compared to 2011’s 2Q, which saw a diluted earnings per share of 18 cents. Year to date, the company’s revenue has grown $55 million to $1.75 billion, while its diluted earnings per share has grown from last year’s 29 cents per share to 47 cents per share in the first half of the year.

Celadon: The Celadon Group has reported for the second quarter a 3.2 percent increase in revenue to $162.6 million, up from 2012’s $157.5 million. Its net income, however, decreased 20 percent in the quarter year over year to $7.2 million from $9 million. Celadon has reported a 20.5 percent year-over-year decrease in earnings per diluted share, however, to 31 cents, down from 2012’s secone quarter’s 39 cents. Celadon’s fiscal year ended June 30, and compared to the 2012 fiscal year, its net income was up 7.1 percent to $27.3 million, and its revenue was up 2.4 percent to $613.6 million. 

Landstar: Landstar System for the quarter reported its second best diluted earnings per share in the company’s history. Revenue in the quarter was $679.3 million, down from 2012’s $736 million. The company’s operating income was down $9 million to $49 .9 million and its net income was down about $5 million to $30.4 million in the quarter. Year to date, its revenue is down $77 million to $1.3 billion, while its operating income is down $8.5 million to $93.4 million, and its net income is down $5 million to $57.2 million.
