Kaputi Part II: Open an issue of Commercial Carrier Journal from the Fifties or Sixties and you can practically smell the cigarette smoke and grease wafting up from the pages. Budgets were big, back then. CCJ employed an editorial cartoonist to depict safety issues and other issues of the day. The jokes are sometimes sexist — and ALWAYS corny. But, judging by the segments longevity, the cartoons were immensely popular. The star of the show is the Kaputi Truck Fleet: For the World War II vets who populated trucking at the time, this was instantly recognized as a play on the German word for “finished,” which perfectly mirrored the fleet’s hapless mechanics and drivers.
