No. 10: Daimler unveils autonomous truck concept

Screen-Shot-2014-09-23-at-6.55.18-AMAt a press event in Germany on July 3, Daimler Trucks pulled the curtains back on its autonomous (driverless) truck concept with its Highway Pilot program that combines vehicle-to-vehicle communication, front-, side- and rear-facing radar and lane-keeping systems to monitor traffic surrounding the vehicle.

At the IAA show in Hannover, Germany a few months later, the company unveiled the actual truck, dubbed “Future Truck 2025,” a futuristic Mercedes Actros cabover with revolutionary aerodynamic and lighting concepts that made the jaws of 350 trade journalists from around the world simultaneously drop.

While Daimler released the news in 2014, it will be 2025 or later before this proof-of-concept is ready for prime time.

“Our Future Truck 2025 provides compelling answers to the challenges that our customers will be facing in the future,” said Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, Daimler Board Member for Trucks and Buses at the IAA press event. “Our aim is to press forward with readying this technology for the market and to bring it to series-production standard. I am convinced that this will open up a whole new business perspective for Daimler Trucks.”

Daimler has spent more than 1 billion dollars on its Future Truck 2025 project to date, and the company firmly believes its concept has the solutions to meet future challenges in the trucking industry.
