Price of diesel makes tiny move upward, now down just 5 cents year over
The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel rose two-tenths of a penny in the week ended Dec. 23 to $3.873, according to the DOE. The price of diesel has now remained nearly stagnant in the last three weeks, changing just a fraction of a cent in each.

Regulators shut down Santa Inc. for violating hours regs, not meeting medical requirements
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has shut down an owner-operator listed to be based in the “Arctic region north of Alaska,” for disregard for the agency’s hours-of-service regulations and losing his medical certification due to a BMI that is too high, according to an anonymous source from the agency.

Senate introduces its version of bill to halt July 1 hours-of-service rule
A bill was introduced into the Senate last week that, if enacted, would halt the most recent hours-of-service rule change and allow truck drivers to operate under the pre-July 1 rules again, until Congress can review the rule further. The bill is the Senate counterpart to a House bill introduced in October.

Cargo theft report: Number of thefts drops while value loss per load increases
The number of cargo thefts recorded in the rolling quarter between September and November was 222 — an 8 percent jump from the prior quarter (June-August), but a small decrease from the prior rolling three months, when 231 cargo thefts were reported, according to data released by FreightWatch International.

Tonnage increase in November pushed tonnage index to another record high, ATA says
The amount of tonnage hauled by the for-hire trucking industry rose in November by 2.7 percent after declining in October by a downardly revised 2.8 percent, according to ATA. The index’s increases, however, are being spurred by sectors that produce heavy freight, like construction and auto sales, ATA says.

Navistar — makes of International trucks and Navistar engines — reported this week a $154 million net loss in the fourth quarter of 2013, making some strides from its $2.8 billion loss in the same quarter last year. It’s still feeling the hit of pre-existing warranty adjustments from its EGR-only engines, company leadership says.
