On Monday, Jan. 6, instructional design and learning company Luma “Brighter Learning” announced a new Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) eNugget Solution for CDL schools and motor carriers.

Luma’s ELDT eNugget Solution is a digital, on-demand collection of training modules that CDL schools and motor carriers can use to maximize training efficiency and outcomes for drivers inside and outside the classroom.

The new product covers all of the required theory coursework and safety topics outlined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s “entry-level driver training” rule. The agency published a final version of the rule, Minimum Training Requirements for Entry-Level Commercial Motor Vehicle Operators, in late 2016. The enforcement date is set to begin Feb. 7, 2020.

Gina Anderson, Ed.D., chief executive of Luma and expert in adult learning, says the ELDT eNugget Solution presents training content by topic in a unique Q&A format for drivers. The learner first views specific questions for each topic to self-assess their knowledge.

“If somebody already knows the content, the question we ask in adult learning theory is ‘Do you have to be forced to go through it?’ The answer is no,” Dr. Anderson says.

When a driver clicks on a question, the answer is delivered in a Luma eNugget — a short learning module with various media that includes text, images, audio, simulations and video. The media covers all learning modalities and caters to the unique learning preferences of professional truck drivers.

“Giving the adult learner a variety of mediums is the best way for learning,” Dr. Anderson says.

The Luma ELDT eNuggets engage drivers in a game-like learning environment where they can earn points for completing modules. Drivers take assessments to test their knowledge and skills to prepare for the final exam. All Luma eNuggets also give drivers the option to learn in their native languages.

Paper Transport, Inc. (PTI), a dry-van truckload carrier with a fleet of more than 800 power units, is implementing Luma’s ELDT eNugget Solution. PTI trains a select number of recent CDL graduates. The company also plans to use the product to fill knowledge gaps and provide immediate training to new drivers, based on need, for all levels of experience.

The De Pere, Wis.-based company already uses the Luma DRIVE FIRST learning management platform and training collection for driver orientation and ongoing training. The new training content will enhance PTI’s ability to transition drivers into its organization during the first 90 days.

“We will meet the driver with learning in the moment they need it most,” explains Julie Decker, organizational development manager for PTI. “This is a huge advantage for us when a driver joins our organization. We are able to get content to drivers on demand, in a very comfortable way, outside of the classroom.”

“Luma’s ELDT eNugget Solution gives our fleet a learning advantage by helping drivers better retain knowledge and best practices for safety,” Decker continues.

In July 2019, the FMCSA announced a delay in a key rule provision to verify compliance. The agency is delaying its Training Provider Registry (TPR) which it will use to keep track of approved training providers and drivers who complete training. The agency moved the enforcement date for the TPR to Feb.7, 2022.

The agency maintains that the standards for required classroom curriculum and behind-the-wheel training should be adhered to starting Feb. 7, 2020. If the FMCSA decides to make any changes to the training curriculum, Dr. Anderson says Luma will quickly update the ELDT eNugget Solution.
