DOT’s second in command leaving, FHA’s Mendez to fill position
The Department of Transportation’s John Porcari, deputy secretary, will be leaving his post at the start of the year, according to emails circulated to DOT employees this week by Porcari and Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx. Foxx has said he’s tapped the Federal Highway Administration’s Administrator Victor Mendez to take Porcari’s job as deputy director.

Freight movement down in October, first time since June
Trucking was a drag on the overall amount of freight moved by for-hire transportation in October, according to the Department of Transportation’s monthly Freight Transportation Services Index, unveiled this week. The Index fell 0.7 percent from the all-time high set the month prior.

Turnover at truckload fleets eases down to 97% in third quarter
The annualized turnover rate at large truckload fleets ticked down two percentage points in the third quarter to 97 percent, according to the American Trucking Associations, who reported the turnover rates in its latest Trucking Activity Report. Turnover at small truckload fleets fell to 74 percent.

The national average price for a gallon of diesel fuel is still expected to fall 12 cents in 2014 to $3.77 a gallon, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration.

Trucks moved a whopping 70 percent — $10 trillion — of nation’s goods in 2012
More than 70 percent of both the value and the weight of the freight moved in the 2012 calendar year trekked via truck, according to the DOT. Of the $13.6 trillion worth of goods moved last year, trucks carried $10 trillion of it. Of the 11.7 billion tons of goods shipped, trucks moved 8 billion of them.
