’14, ’15 diesel price forecast upwardly revised, still projected to fall next two years
The Dept. of Energy’s most recent Short Term Energy Outlook projects the U.S.’ average diesel price to fall to $3.85 this year, a 7-cent drop from 2013’s average of $3.92 and a 12-cent drop from 2012’s $3.97. Those numbers, however both are upward revisions of previous projections.

The amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry fell again in January, but is still in all-time high territory, according to the Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ monthly Freight Transportation Services Index.

Trucking employment flat in February, economy adds 175k jobs
The for-hire trucking industry did not add or lose any payroll jobs in February on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the monthly employment report from the DOL, who also downwardly revised January’s preliminary figure of 3,200 added jobs to 2,600 jobs added in the first month of the year.

Navistar, maker of International brand trucks, reported a net loss of $248 million in the first quarter of 2014, stemming from lower sales brought on by its continuing transition away from EGR to SCR as a means for meeting federal emissions standards and lower sales of military vehicles, the company said.

Five-week diesel price surge snapped as national average creeps downward
And so ends the most recent — and rather large — upswing in diesel prices seen in late January and all of February, as the national average diesel price fell in the week ended March 3 one-tenth of a cent to $4.016, according to the Department of Energy.

Trailer orders in January grew 28 percent from the same month last year, according to numbers released this week by ACT Research, who also released data saying the average selling price of a Class 8 truck in January set a record at $44,000.

The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel in the week ended Feb. 24 breached $4 for the first time since the week ended March 25, 2013, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration, who reported the price of diesel rose 2.8 cents nationally to $4.017.
