FTR ‘optimistic’ about truck orders after paltry 2019
“We were abnormally high, and now we’re abnormally low,” said Don Ake, vice president of commercial vehicles for FTR, speaking at the 2019 FTR Transportation Conference on Wednesday. But averaging the two years together, order numbers are still above the seven-year average, he says. “It’s not a crash. [It’s] trying to recover to some sort of normal level.”

Despite uncertainty, trucking’s ‘in a holding pattern’ as economic growth slugs on
Takeaways from economists and trucking analysts at the 2019 FTR Conference: Economic growth has certainly slowed, but there’s little risk of a recession. Conditions for trucking, though no longer benefitting from a stark supply/demand imbalance that caused a rates boom in 2017 and 2018, are still strong, despite the market correction.

Economist: Trucking has a turnover problem, not a driver shortage
Indeed, there’s a large issue of driver turnover, said economist Kristen Monaco. And there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence of carriers struggling to fill seats. But that doesn’t mean there’s a labor shortage, Monaco argues. What’s largely perceived as a labor shortage is in fact a retention issue, with heavy recruiting efforts by fleets contributing to the persistently high turnover rates.

PSI announces sales of 1.5M automatic tire inflation systems
The number one cause of service issues are tires. It’s a big problem,” said Al Cohn, PSI’s director of new market development and engineering support. “Under-inflation is the big issue. That’s where you generate all this heat. Heat is the worst enemy. Over 90 percent of road gators are due to under-inflation.”
