Comment period for sleep apnea ‘pre-rule’ closes July 8
The comment period was extended from the original June 8 deadline to give commenters the chance to study and analyze the results of a study by the American Transportation Research Institute. ATRI’s study, produced via surveys of drivers, concluded that a sleep apnea testing referral made by a medical examiner can cost a trucker upwards of a $1,000 in out-of-pocket expenses — more than a week’s pay, the report notes.

ZF’s concept truck not only features the Evasive Maneuver Assist (EMA) system it announced this week, but also an advanced hybrid drivetrain that runs exclusively on electric power at speeds below 30 mph and a Level 3 autonomous system that lets the truck drive itself on the highway. Global truck components suppliers ZF and WABCO unveiled June 28 the next progression in rear-end collision avoidance technology. The Evasive Maneuver Assist system goes a step beyond active braking systems by giving tractor-trailers the ability to autonomously steer around a stopped vehicle should the truck detect it cannot brake quickly enough to avoid the crash.
