Indicators: ‘Trucking Conditions’ improve again, suspended in neutral territory
Market conditions for carriers, measured by FTR’s monthly Trucking Conditions Index, improved slightly in July. Cheaper diesel offset the negative impacts of freight demand and truck supply, pushing the TCI to its first positive reading since January.

FTR ‘optimistic’ about truck orders after paltry 2019
“We were abnormally high, and now we’re abnormally low,” said Don Ake, vice president of commercial vehicles for FTR, speaking at the 2019 FTR Transportation Conference on Wednesday. But averaging the two years together, order numbers are still above the seven-year average, he says. “It’s not a crash. [It’s] trying to recover to some sort of normal level.”

Takeaways from economists and trucking analysts at the 2019 FTR Conference: Economic growth has certainly slowed, but there’s little risk of a recession. Diesel’s downward pitch continues for another week
The nation’s average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel is now $2.976, the lowest since early February. Diesel prices have declined in 15 of the previous 17 weeks, falling from a 2019 high of $3.171 during the week of May 6.

Diesel prices fall by a penny
The U.S.’ average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel is now $2.983. Fuel prices have dropped for seven consecutive weeks, but have only fallen by six cents during that period. The nation’s fuel prices are approaching the 2019 low of $2.965 set back during the weeks ending Jan. 21 and Jan. 28.

Market conditions swing further in favor of shippers as rates weaken
Market conditions for shippers moved further into positive territory in June, according to FTR’s latest Shippers Conditions Index. June’s reading was the strongest since February 2016.

The U.S.’ average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel is now $3.011, the lowest since mid-February. Since the beginning of 2019, fuel prices have only fluctuated by about a quarter, and prices are now flat compared to the start of the year.
