Trucking adds 2,400 jobs in Jan., near 8-year employment high
The for-hire trucking industry added 2,400 jobs in January on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the Department of Labor’s monthly report, released Feb. 6. It also upwardly revised December’s job gains to 11,900 — up a few thousand from the 7,300 reported in the DOL’s preliminary report released last month.

Diesel at lowest point since Nov. 2009
The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel fell 3.5 cents in the week ended Feb. 2 to $2.831. That’s the lowest the U.S. average has been since the week ended Nov. 9, 2009. The national average price has now fallen 12 consecutive weeks and 29 out of the last 31 weeks.

Spot market rates continue downward trend as fuel prices drop, capacity loosens
Per-mile rates on the spot market fell again in January, according to data released today by Internet Truckstop. Fuel prices may be the biggest culprit in rates’ downward trend, but the linehaul portion of rates — the actual base rates — have still be improving, according to reports recently.

The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel fell 6.7 cents in the week ended Jan. 26, according to the Department of Energy’s weekly report, bringing the nation’s average at-pump diesel price to $3.866 — the lowest since the week ended March 1, 2010.

In a joint letter sent to Congress on Jan. 26, the American Trucking Associations, AAA and the Chamber of Commerce asked lawmakers to raise taxes on gasoline and diesel purchases — a solution they say will provide the funds the U.S. needs to prevent a shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund.

In its January edition of the Short Term Energy Outlook, the DOE’s Energy Information Administration forecasts the price of diesel to average $2.85 this year, which would be a 98-cent drop from 2014’s average of $3.83.
