The Internet was mostly a novelty when PeopleNet incorporated in 1994 and began to offer a cellular-based communications and fleet management system with data delivery through a Web-based interface. After nearly two decades of profitable growth, in August, 2011, Trimble acquired PeopleNet to become its sole owner and indefinite holder.

Today, PeopleNet has more than 250,000 units deployed on vehicles in North America. The company started offering its e-Log application in 2002.

Fleets that reviewed PeopleNet’s e-Logs application gave it the highest marks for service and support, followed by return on investment and data integration. By comparison to the other review categories, the one with the lowest average score was the cost of system administration.

“The product is very good and has potential for payback but like everything the company has to commit to making the payback a reality with changes in procedures, driver interaction, driver coaching and tight controls.  Nothing will work if you don’t commit to these things and turn the process into a positive for the drivers.  Driver competition and rewards are key to driving up MPG to pay for the EOBR.  Commitment and investment is also needed to integrate the data into the dispatch system.  The products can, and do pay for themselves when properly launched. ”
