Unannounced brake check day puts 14 percent of inspected trucks out of service
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance checked brakes on 6,337 commercial motor vehicles during its annual unannounced brake check day May 6, the enforcement group announced this week, resulting in a 14.2 percent out-of-service rate overall.

Proposed rule will require straight trucks to have underride guards, reflective tape
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released last week an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that will, when final, require single-unit trucks to be equipped with rear impact guards and reflective tape on the rear and sides of the trucks to improve their visibility.

Federal appeals court upholds ruling that FedEx drivers were employees, not contractors
A federal appeals court ruled last week in favor of the more than 500 FedEx Ground driver plaintiffs in a now five-year-old class action case in which the drivers claimed they were wrongly classified as independent contractors, arguing they instead should have been classified as employees of the company.
