Indicators: Trucking dropped 2,400 jobs in May, overall employment stagnant
Trucking employment in May totaled 1.4604 million, the lowest since last October. The U.S. as a whole in May added only 38,000 jobs, but the country’s unemployment rate fell to 4.7 percent, the rate in eight years. The unemployment rate’s decline, however, was due almost entirely to a drop in the number of people looking for jobs, generally a sign of a weakening job market.

Closing out the first quarter of the year, market conditions for trucking companies fell a staggering 50 percent in March from February, according to FTR’s monthly Trucking Conditions Index. FTR cited weak economic growth and slow freight gains as the reason for the index’s decline.

A regulation-driven capacity crisis will slam trucking sometime in mid-2017 to as late as 2018, John Larkin, managing director, Stifel Financial Corporation, told fleet executives at the CCJ Spring Symposium this week. Consequently, shippers see the current market as their last chance to push rates down before an inevitable rate upswing, he said.
