Diesel prices drop 2.5 cents nationwide
Diesel prices resumed their downward course again last week with a 2.5-cent drop nationally, following the prior before’s considerable jump. Last week’s decrease ends a two-week climb in which prices jumped 8 cents, according to the Department of Energy’s weekly report.

Truckload rates continue downward spiral in September, all three segments drop
Rates in all three segments were also well below September ‘14 averages, with each being down more than 20 cents from last September’s averages. Loosening of industry capacity of late, along with cheaper fuel, have put downward pressure on gross rates. Line haul rates have generally continued to trend upward.

On-highway diesel prices in Ohio and the broader Midwest region are on a sharp upswing this week due to refinery work in the region. As of this morning, the average price in the Midwest region have climbed 11.6 cents since Monday, says ProMiles’ Chris Lee.

In a Class 8 demand outlook at FTR’s Transportation Conference on Wednesday, Starks said utilization of equipment is about 90 percent right now, a few points above the mark that typically indicates fleet growth. “Anything about 85 to 88 percent suggests you need to be adding equipment into the fleet,” he said. “Things are still a little bit tight.”
