Preliminary approval has been granted to the nearly $25 million settlement struck last year between fuel providers — such as Exxon, Love’s and BP — and fuel buyers, both diesel and gasoline, in the ongoing “hot fuel” lawsuits, originally filed in 2006.

Diesel price hits lowest point since March 2010
The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel fell 6.7 cents in the week ended Jan. 26, according to the Department of Energy’s weekly report, bringing the nation’s average at-pump diesel price to $3.866 — the lowest since the week ended March 1, 2010.

ATA asks Congress to raise fuel taxes, says infrastructure deficiencies cost industry 141 million hours a year
In a joint letter sent to Congress on Jan. 26, the American Trucking Associations, AAA and the Chamber of Commerce asked lawmakers to raise taxes on gasoline and diesel purchases — a solution they say will provide the funds the U.S. needs to prevent a shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund.

The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel fell below the $3 mark for the first time since September 2010 and its lowest point since the week ended Sept. 6, 2010, according to numbers released Jan. 19 by the Department of Energy.

In its January edition of the Short Term Energy Outlook, the DOE’s Energy Information Administration forecasts the price of diesel to average $2.85 this year, which would be a 98-cent drop from 2014’s average of $3.83.

Rates are flat, but that’s partially due to the continuing free fall of diesel prices and carriers’ subsequent changes to fuel surcharges. Also, NAFTA freight increased in October, according to the DOT, with trucking’s share of cross-border freight seeing a sizable uptick in value.

Trucking employment rallies in December, adding 7,300 jobs
The for-hire trucking industry added 7,300 jobs in December on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the Department of Labor’s monthly employment report. The U.S. as a whole in December added 252,000 nonfarm jobs, dropping the U.S. unemployment rate to 5.6 percent.
