Rates are flat, but that’s partially due to the continuing free fall of diesel prices and carriers’ subsequent changes to fuel surcharges. Also, NAFTA freight increased in October, according to the DOT, with trucking’s share of cross-border freight seeing a sizable uptick in value.

The for-hire trucking industry added 7,300 jobs in December on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the Department of Labor’s monthly employment report. The U.S. as a whole in December added 252,000 nonfarm jobs, dropping the U.S. unemployment rate to 5.6 percent.

Diesel continues skid, hits lowest point since Nov. 2010
The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel fell in the week ended Jan. 5 to $3.137. That’s the lowest average since November 2010, according to the DOE, and the eighth straight week the price has dropped. It’s also the 25th week out of the last 27 the price has dropped.

Money Monday: Truck and trailer orders post huge gains, fuel prices pressing rates
On this New Year’s edition of Money Monday (and the last of 2014), Class 8 truck orders continued their recent boom, while trailer orders also saw a big spike. Rates have seen a small drop in recent weeks, partly attributable to changes in fuel prices and surcharges. Also, the restart rollback is expected to boost capacity utilization.
